Developer Facepunch Studios is currently going through the process of eliminating any Nintendo-related content from the Garry's Mod section on the Steam Workshop page. It has been reported that Nintendo has issued a takedown request to the developer.
In a blog post on Steam, the developer states: "To be completely honest, this is completely fair. It is Nintendo's content and it is their decision what content others can use. If Nintendo does not want their content to be interacted with in Garry's Mod, then we must honor that decision." Facepunch Studios is requesting content creators to remove all Nintendo-related mods from Garry's Mod, citing a history of mods spanning over twenty years.
Garry's Mod is a physics simulator that was released in 2004. In this 'game', players have the ability to create their own projects and games without any predefined goals or gameplay rules. The software heavily relies on user-generated content, which can be shared through platforms like the Steam Workshop. Facepunch Studios has acknowledged that some of this content includes material that Nintendo has rights to, prompting the Japanese company to issue DMCA takedown requests. Nintendo is known for being strict when it comes to protecting its copyrights.
