Software developer iXsystems has announced that it will no longer be continuing development of NAS software based on FreeBSD. The latest version, TrueNAS Core 13.3, will be the final release based on FreeBSD, with the company shifting its focus to TrueNAS Scale, which is based on Debian Linux.
iXsystems has confirmed to The Register that they will be discontinuing the BSD version of TrueNAS in the future. TrueNAS Core, which essentially is a version of FreeBSD, will be replaced by TrueNAS Scale, based on Debian Linux. TrueNAS Scale is designed for users looking to incorporate containers and virtual machines into their NAS systems, offering greater scalability.
The most recent release of FreeBSD, version 13.2, was made available in April 2023. iXsystems had indicated last year that TrueNAS Core would not be updated to FreeBSD 13.2 but would continue using FreeBSD 13.1, despite the fact that it had reached its end-of-life in July of the previous year. The company now states that there will be one more update for TrueNAS Core before it enters a maintenance phase.
"TrueNAS Core is transitioning to a maintenance phase, while TrueNAS Scale is the platform where we will focus on developing and delivering new features and updated components," the company explains. A new version of TrueNAS Core, based on FreeBSD 13.3, is set to be released in the coming month, featuring updates to ZFS and an upgrade to Samba version 4.19. Following this release, iXsystems recommends that TrueNAS users consider migrating to TrueNAS Scale.
