11% Rise in Fines for Smartphone Use While Driving Reported in the Netherlands

The number of fines for keeping a smartphone in the car or on the bicycle is expected to reach nearly 200,000 by 2023, up from almost 180,000 in 2022. The police have been focusing on enforcement efforts in the past year to address this growing issue.

According to data from the Central Judicial Collection Agency, the majority of fines were related to using a smartphone in the car, with over 62,000 fines issued for using a smartphone while cycling. This marks an increase of around 9,000 fines compared to the previous year. Beginning March 1, 2024, the fine for using a smartphone while driving will be €420, while cyclists will face a fine of €160. These amounts do not include administration fees.

The number of fines for smartphone use while driving has been steadily increasing over the years, with a jump of over 21,000 fines last year. In 2021, there were 140,000 fines issued, which rose to 180,000 the following year. Since the summer of 2021, the police have been utilizing the MONOcam to catch individuals using their mobile phones while driving.
