Google has announced a major investment of a billion dollars in a project aimed at enhancing internet connectivity between the US and Japan. The project will lead to the development of two new submarine cables, Proa and Taihei. These cables are expected to significantly improve the communication network between various countries in the Pacific Ocean.
According to a statement released on Thursday by the company, the Proa cable, manufactured by NEC, will connect Japan with the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam. On the other hand, the Taihei cable will establish a connection between Japan and Hawaii, a state in the US.
In addition to the installation of the new fiber optic cables, Google plans to expand the existing Taiwan-Philippines-U.S. network to include a link to the Northern Mariana Islands. This expansion will create a new pathway for connectivity between the US mainland and Japan. Furthermore, the Tabua Cable, which currently connects the US with Australia and Fiji, will be extended to Hawaii. The company also disclosed plans to build a connection between the Northern Mariana Islands, Hawaii, and Guam.
