Google is blocking RCS messages on rooted Android devices to prevent spam, leading to several users experiencing issues with chat messages via the new protocol suddenly stopping working.
Reports of this issue can be found on various social media platforms, including Reddit and XDA. Users who have rooted their Android phones seem to be affected by this change, with some even demonstrating the inability to send messages through a video.
Google has confirmed to The Verge that they have implemented a security measure to combat spam and abusive messages in the RCS standard. The company states that automation is a significant contributor to the spread of spam via RCS, and these measures aim to prevent such activities.
Mishaal Rahman reports that Google has included "attestation" checks to block messages, utilizing the Play Integrity API. This means that not only rooted devices but also devices with specific certifications may no longer support RCS.
