Microsoft's unexplained account blocks defy new EU laws

Microsoft has been blocking the accounts of some users without providing a clear reason, which goes against the regulations stated in the Digital Services Act. Several Dutch users shared their experience with RTL News, stating that they have lost access to services such as Outlook and OneDrive without a specific explanation from Microsoft.

The Digital Services Act, which has been in effect for most online platforms since February 17, 2024, requires companies to give a 'clear and specific justification' when blocking an account. Experts familiar with the DSA told RTL News that Microsoft is not following this rule and should provide a detailed explanation for blocking an account.

In response to the report, Microsoft briefly commented that they are collaborating with regulators and other stakeholders to ensure digital security and compliance with the DSA. A spokesperson for the DSA regulator in Ireland, where Microsoft's European headquarters are located, confirmed that discussions are ongoing between the regulator and Microsoft regarding this issue.
