The mission involves astronauts transitioning between spacecraft for lunar landings, with recent testing conducted by NASA and SpaceX on the docking system crucial for this capability. In the Artemis III mission scenario, astronauts will travel from Earth to lunar orbit aboard the Orion spacecraft before transferring to the Starship Human Landing System for descent to the lunar surface.

Subsequent missions will see astronauts moving between Orion and Starship via the Gateway lunar space station, utilizing SpaceX's proven docking system.
