The beautiful festival of Holi is celebrated in India during the transition from spring to summer. However, this time also brings challenges as people play Holi for hours under the scorching sun. The prolonged exposure to heat during the morning Holi celebrations can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses if precautions are not taken.

We reached out to medical experts who shared some tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable Holi experience. One of the most serious heat-related illnesses to be aware of during Holi is heat stroke, which occurs when the body's cooling mechanisms fail to regulate body temperature. Dr.

Divya Gopal suggested simple tips to combat heat waves during Holi, such as staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, fruit juices, and electrolyte-rich sports drinks. Other homemade drinks like lassi, rice water, and buttermilk can help rehydrate the body. Eating lighter meals with high water content foods like fruits and vegetables can also help stay cool and hydrated.

Dr. Swarupa Deulkar emphasized the importance of staying hydrated to prevent dehydration and heat-related illnesses. Symptoms can start with thirst, dry skin, and lightheadedness and escalate quickly if not addressed promptly.

In addition to staying hydrated, there are safety measures to mitigate risks while celebrating Holi in hot weather. Using organic colors, applying coconut oil as a protective barrier, wearing eye protection, avoiding wastage of water, and choosing clean playing areas are some of the suggestions provided by experts. Dr.

Vikas Doshi highlighted that extreme heat poses risks, especially for vulnerable populations like children, the elderly, and those with existing health conditions. Heat-related illnesses can range from mild exhaustion to severe conditions like heat stroke. It is essential to take precautions and stay safe while enjoying the vibrant festival of colors during the hot weather of Holi.
