Turkish regulator demands Meta to cease linking data between Instagram and Threads

The competition authority in Turkey has taken action against Meta by imposing an interim measure to prevent data sharing between Instagram and Threads. This measure will stay in place until a final decision is reached regarding potential violations by the tech giant.

Last December, regulators in Turkey initiated an inquiry into Meta, the parent company of Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp, citing concerns about the company's dominant market position. The Turkish authority raised issues about the sharing of data between Instagram and Threads, suggesting that such integration could breach competition laws and have a negative impact on the market, according to Reuters news agency.

In addition to the interim measure, Meta has been fined 4.8 million lira per day for failing to provide clear and transparent data sharing notifications to users. These notifications were found to lack sufficient information, leading to a daily fine equivalent to 136.5 thousand euros. Failure to comply with the interim measure could result in further sanctions against the company.
